Just in time – notes from this morning’s #TTSed breakfast

This morning I shared breakfast with some teachers. We shared our experiences with using Google Docs in the classroom, Teacher Dashboard and BYOD. I was able to share a few ideas and I told them that I’d email them some notes. I changed my mind: I’ve decided to blog the ideas. BYOD: – check that […]

Guest Post: SAMR and me

SAMR was such a new concept to me I decided to ignore it. I’ve been out of the classroom for a while. I didn’t understand it and it seemed too removed from what I was doing in the classroom. But I found myself wanting to get the students to use their devices to their full potential. I […]

Guest Post: Back in the day

So back in 1996 I was a bright eyed and bushy tailed teacher grad. Newly married, my new teaching career was carefully planned out before me. A couple years to become registered. Complete my degree then after that have some kids. Like all perfect plans they didn’t eventuate. God brings imperfections and surprises. Looking back […]

What’s the best way to set up my child’s iPad for school?

Share an Apple ID and turn on automatic downloads. Add an email account for her and setup your iMessage so that chaos doesn’t ensue. Find my iPad (goes without saying). Use iCloud backup She turned 10 yesterday, and the iPad mini was a surprise. She’s a mature, intelligent girl (don’t tell her I said that!), […]

A fiery BYOD Meeting

I attended an info evening put on by my local primary school on their new BYOD initiative last night. While there were some supportive parents there, the night was dominated by complaint – and it was hard to watch. I wanted to outline a couple of myths and realities. Please, if you disagree, that’s what […]

iPads in Special Education – the discussion that left me speechless

I spent a few moments talking a Principal at a school for kids with special needs this afternoon. These kids are highly dependent – most of them can’t speak. We were talking about how iPads might be useful to her organisation. She is admirably skeptical – she really doesn’t want anything introduced that won’t make […]

Lock your iPad so children can only use one app

This is fantastic. iOS6 enables teachers to lock their iPad or iPhone so that it can only be used for one app. This will be particularly useful for Early Childhood Education and Special Education. I tried it this afternoon. A very simple way to lock your iPad or iPhone so that only one app can […]

iOS6 – is it worth it?

iOS6 was released at 5AM this morning. I had installed it by about 7:15 on my iPhone 4S – and I am stoked. Maps is my favourite bit – but that might because I have a 4S. The 3D building are awesome, but the turn-by-turn navigation (it talks to you) is brilliant. 3D building are […]

The 4-year-old Movie Director

Orson, who is 4, has a little history with iPads. This is his latest creation. His older siblings modelled the software for him, and he snuck the shoot in before dinner the other night. While it’s hardly got a theme of redemption, and the acting is a little 2 dimensional, I think it’s nice. He […]

iOS 5.1.1 update warning

This broke my friend’s iPad and he had to restore from backup. Just in case you were planning on loading it on the fly, I would suggest you make sure you have a backup and some time to restore your device so you don’t end up having his experience.
